I am primarily a photographer of landscape, both natural, and that created by human habitation. There is a long tradition in the artistic portrayal of landscape. While I am rooted in that tradition, my approach is not always traditional. In 2006 I started a new body of work I called Gazing Ball or Glass Sphere Photographs. These photographs were made using a clear glass globe about twelve inches in diameter. This work involved crawling around on the ground with my camera, which was become increasingly difficult because of arthritis. In 2019 I finely admitted to myself that it was time to move on. I had done a few workshops and experimented with encaustic (an ancient hot wax process) and loved the look of the final product. Also, I have to admit, I found working with a medium that involved fire, hot wax, and deadly fumes, was exciting. Currently I am working with encaustic, my photographs and, occasionally, pastel. My subject mater is still the natural world. The wax layers give my work a sense of mystery and the surface becomes three dimensional and painterly. In the gallery titled Exploring Identity you will find portrait images of a friend who, at the age of sixty six, decided to transition from male to female. We worked together for about five years. In 2022 I self-publish a book. It includes my photographs, and an interview in which she discuses her process.
